A New Room for Mabel

Mabel is growing up and her baby sister needed her nursery, so it was time to create a new room. She needed somewhere bright and fun where she could keep her books and toys and work on projects. She also needed a place she would like as she got older.

While we were there doing a room makeover for his little sister, we also created a sophisticated boys room for a sophisticated young boy, Gavyn.

River District Project

In Eagle, Idaho is a new development on the river. This is the clubhouse. The Patio Home overlooks the water with this nice patio and deck. It is a 2600+ square foot home.

Cherry cabinetry, granite counters, high end appliances, warm colors, large craftsman style light fixtures, & great river views are among ammenities in the kitchen.

The Carriage Home is a 2100 sq ft. home with an alley loading garage. Wanting to have it be a contrast from the patio home, I wanted it to be crisp, fresh and transitional in style.

This has been an amazing project to work on. In a few months 3 townhome units will be ready. The center unit is 3 stories and will be done in a very contemporary style with a rustic twist.

Feeling Blue

One of the best parts of doing design work is the people I get to work with. When this home addition was in it's framing stage, I was contacted by the homeowners for the interior design. As much as I loved the design work, it was the collaboration and getting to know the homeowners that was the best part! One thing that wasn't thought about when the blueprints were drawn was that there would be multiple focal points in the room. The homeowners wanted a large television and the space above the fireplace couldn't accomodate that. This was resolved by having the cabinet maker build a large frame for the television, and then set up a small visiting area around the fireplace. When needed, the furniture around the fireplace can easily be moved into the larger grouping.

I love the classic blue and white, white finish trim details, and then the contemporary drum shade light fixture. The hutch is made from black walnut to match the kitchen cabinetry and showcases the family's blue and white collection. Built in window seats were added to the family room and nook for the avid readers.

They are an amazing family with 6 young children and a very busy and active lifestyle. Betsy, the homeowner, had many wonderful built-in organization ideas and a desire to incorporate 'kid friendly' surfaces, while still achieving a classic sense of style. Travertine was combined with glazed procelain tile for the backsplash, and ultra durable Cambria in Jerusalem Sandstone was used for the countertops.

We met with the cabinet maker and custom designed beautiful cabinetry made from Black Walnut. Storage opportunites are abundant in the venthood with functioning storage cabinets. Pictured below is a built-in bake center with bin front drawers showcasing cold cereal (Betsy is known for always having an abundance of cold cereal selections). Behind the doors and drawers Betsy is able to keep all of her small appliances and baking needs concealed.

In the mud room we had the finish carpenter frame in a large piece of sheet metal that can be used as a magnet/message board for the family. The flooring is Tarkett vinyl to look like stained concrete. (Chloe is modeling in front of the message board.)

This is the main bath off of the kitchen where the Tarkett vinyl was used again, as well as a laminate counter that matches the Cambria in the kitchen. Betsy had pull-out step stools added to the toe kicks of the cabinetry, and handy storage drawers under the sink bases. We had the shower curtain sewn to match the towels.

Betsy loves blue and she loves wallpaper. We combined the two in her dining area.

She also loves classic, vintage things and found these great postcards that we framed in shadow box frames and hung at the top of the stairs.

Wanting something fun to transition from the public spaces to the bedrooms, we made these silhouettes of each of her 6 children. No, we didn't cut them out of paper as is traditionally done, we took it to the 2010 version and photographed the children's profiles, then my mother (a photoshop wiz) turned them into these blacked out versions on a linen background, they were then printed as photos and framed.

This is the laundry with blue cabinets, a backsplash of mixed up ceramic tiles accented with blue glass mosaic tile bands. The inspiration for the laundry room was the Tarkett vinyl flooring that Betsy fell in love with.

We had blue cubbies, coat hooks, lockers and shoe bins built into the mudroom off the garage. We had it painted a slate blue color, coordinating with the slate blue dots in the wallpaper.

The mudroom accomodating the backyard is one of my favorites. We used red brick wallpaper that matches the family room fireplace brick, added blue beadboard wainscot, and played up the red brick by painting the doors red. Don't you just love the vintage style sink Betsy found?

Always keeping storage in mind, the benches are hinged to accomodate gloves, scarves, etc.

Recycled

Recycling furniture is often the name of the game in staging houses. As a house sells, I move the furniture and accessories to stage another home. Each home has its own personality, size, and amenities and it's fun and challenging to rework furniture into a new space. Upon the sale of the Parade Home Bandon Model, which was over 3400 sq. ft., there were 2 smaller homes that needed to be staged using the Bandon's furnishings.

In this home, I took the bonus room furniture, added some blue accessories and recycled it into the great room. The coffee table was once brown. The leather couches/chair have a bright red Navajo print underneath and big loose pillows in the same motif. I removed those, turned over the cushions and added large cream linen pillows to give them a fresh updated look.

The kitchen feature Ornamental Granite, white cabinet uppers and espresso bases, white tile with blue glass accents, and Gray Nuance accent walls. The flooring is a laminate wood that has a handscraped look.

A convenient built-in desk area in the kitchen.

The table is an old pedestal table I salvaged from a warehouse and covered with a tablecloth. The chairs are some old wicker ones I covered with white slipcovers.

I bought a black and white photo book from Barnes and Noble and framed some of the prints in silver frames and hung them symmetrically on a dining nook wall.

Four black and white botanical photos fill the stairwell and are accented by Gray Nuance, a pale blue paint color from Frazee Paint.

I took an old brown bed and had it painted black. (You will see this bed ensemble re-used in several of the posts). This time around I added blue sheets to match the walls. The blue is Blue Comet from Frazee and the Yellow is Sandy Lane, also from Frazee Paint.

I have found that I can reuse black and white with about any color scheme.

I fell in love with these little blue glass 1/2x1 inch brick tiles from DalTile. I had them capped with a white pencil liner from American Olean Profiles collection.

The little boys zebra room and the damask nursery were originally shown against Olive Branch walls and now here they are with Sandy Lane.

The little blue glass tiles, Moonlight from American Olean Legacy Glass, match the paint color in the laundry room.

Here, the blue Daltile 1/2x1" are used as a border on the backsplash.

Brighton Homes Paramount Bandon Model

Exterior. This facade covers 3 stories and 3400 sq. ft. of family friendly living.I decided to play black and white off the neutral backdrop and white trim. For the kids rooms, I had them painted pale pastel pink, blue, and green and again used black and white.

This is one of my new favorite tiles. Doesn't it look just like slate? It's actually a porcelain slate replica. I love the 16x24 size on the floor and the 2x4 on the tub. Good stuff.

My friend Dan (the mastermind behind the Chatham Towne and Sonata projects) wanted to surprise his wife for Christmas by having their home restaged while they were away visiting family. His wife is uber talented. She can sew anything, sing like an angel and has creativity oozing out her ears. So, no pressure. Hah! Here are a few pics of what I pulled together. He had some furniture and accessories he used for staging some of his model homes that he was finished with and gave me permission to work into their home. Fun!

The wife, Emily, made these curtains and bedding.

Here's a fun twist to the story. Several months earlier, when Dan was out of town on business, Emily enlisted my help to pull together a new office for Dan. This is what we came up with in just a couple of days. I know she burned the midnight oil painting the walls and sewing curtains.

I can take no credit for this room, but had to snap a pic of the creative wall treatment she did with ribbon and upholstery tacks. She also created the lamp shades, cord cover, and corona bed treatment.

Out n About Design Center

In an economy where many businesses are being forced to scale back or close up shop, Out n About Floorcoverings has experienced growth. At the end of 2009, the owner, Darren Ashcraft, decided to move from his small showroom to a much bigger space and expand what he was able to offer his clients. Larry and I have worked with him frequently and were honored to be the designer and builder of his new showroom space. It was basically a large warehouse with a concrete floor. I designed the new space. Larry built it out, painted it, installed cabinetry and Darren and his team installed flooring, tile, and the display racks.

This kitchen display features colonial cream cabinetry, cappuccino base cabinetry, caesarstone countertops, and porcelain tile with glass mosaic accent bands. Hardwood flooring selection area.

These areas showcase the children's play space. The archway is finished in 3x6 tumbled travertine tile. The floor is a Tarkett vinyl made to look like diamond plated metal. The cabinets are cranberry and the countertop is actually chalkboard laminate.

Commercial grade carpet tiles are used as the area rug. Larry painted the shapes on the wall and Woodland Manufacturing created the patterned vinyl words for us.

These kitchen diplays feature laminate countertops with undermount sinks. I love that you can put undermount sinks with laminate. Genius!

The receptionist desk. I love the galvanized sheet metal and the way it ties in with the exposed metal pipes overhead. We also had the metal sign left in its raw metal state to coordinate with the industrial element.

The tiled wall was built out to accomodate a flat screen tv and a linear fireplace that we filled with candles.

This is the bathroom featuring a black and cream checkerboard floor and black tile wainscot. The tile actually has a subtle damask print to it. The countertop is Cambria. I had Larry order these Tuscan Olive Island legs to fashion this sink base. Per code, we needed to access the workings under the sink and I didn't like the way they looked exposed. I fashioned the skirt to fit in between the base legs so that the water heater and pipes would be accessible.

Something that has been installed since I took these pictures, is a leather and cork striped floor in the office. It is very cool and I will need to get some pics soon.

Fun Bathroom--Cheap and Chic

These are some pictures I took of a bathroom I recently spec'd. I had them wrap the tub in beadboard which was painted and lightly glazed to match the cabinetry. The tile is from the American Olean mattes and brights collection. It is a very affordable line and offers numerous colors and shapes to create nice combinations. I previously used it extensively in a contemporary home design to create a completely different look and style.

In the shower we used the 3x6 bricks in matte nutmeg for the floor set in a subway pattern. I used 8x12 gloss biscuit offset for the surround with a harlequin border. That same border is used as the backsplash for the sinks and tub. A beaded liner tile borders the deco feature.

The flooring is vinyl. It is from Tarkett and is supposed to look like seagrass. It comes in 2 colors and this is the darker of the two. I have used the lighter in another house. It is one of my favorite new flooring selections...and it's vinyl! The countertops are laminate. They are called morro zephyr from Wilsonart.
Also, note the way the cabinet maker puts a drawer under the sink cabinet doors. I love that! It is such an ingenious use of space there. I wish I had known these cabinet guys when I selected things for my own home.

The faucets are from Moen in Antique Pewter.

This is a scrapbook room/toy room I used vinyl lettering in. The thing I like most about this is that it's an economical and easy wall treatment that is kid friendly (doesn't break & can be wiped down). Unlike wallpaper-- which gets expensive, requires an installer (whether it's you or a pro), & a time commitment-- this is an alternative that can be installed easily, removed fairly easily, and is inexpensive.

Chatham Towne Grand Opening

Chatham Towne Townhomes grand opening was this weekend. I collaborated with Dan Clark from Ted Mason homes on the design. He had a vision of a North Eastern Coastal look and asked if I could help him fine tune the interior and exterior design as well as make the interior selections. He partnered with Pottery Barn and they furnished them with suggestions I made on color schemes. I really wanted one of the units to be black and white played against the Silver Sage paint color. This unit was inspired by Sarah Wiley (powder bath wallpaper) and Christa Reid's (silver sage) homes. The other unit I envisioned as more neutral with splashes of red and orange. I selected a brick wallpaper for the laundry room and did black cabinets. The unit with the checkered backsplash I consider Country French Vanilla. It is a creamy yellow with chocolate brown doors, vanilla cabinets, and chocolate and bisque checkered tile. The units not pictured are slate blue with white cabinets and doors and khaki walls with moss green cabinets and doors. They turned out beautiful and if you want to check them out in person they are off 5 mile between McMillan and Ustick.

Double bay windows, window boxes and natural cedar shake siding adorn the exterior of an end unit.

Built-in banquettes and tables are in every unit. They really help maximize space.
Each unit also features a built-in entertainment unit with a flat screen included!
Every bathroom has framed mirrors--no plain jane glue-ons in here.

Sunset Ridge Construction

Caesarstone countertops, an undermount sink and new plumbing fixtures replaced Formica counters, an older sink and outdated faucet.
A travertine and glass mosaic backsplash coordinates with the tile border frame in the new shower.

This is a bathroom remodel I collaborated on with my husband and his construction company, Sunset Ridge Construction (www.sunsetridgeconstruction.com). Unfortunately, I didn't take any before shots, but we completely gutted the space and re-did the cabinetry, tile, paint, electrical, counters, and plumbing. The original bathroom had a fiberglass tub/shower insert that was removed and turned into a walk-in tile shower. Additionally, walls were removed to open up the space. Due to effective planning we were able to accomplish this remodel while the homeowner was out of town on vacation.

I know, under the Orthapaedics part of the sign looks empty. It is for their awards to be displayed and since they just opened this office, they have yet to fill it up. Knowing the head of this office, it will be filled up in no time.

This is the home I have been working on for this year's Fall Collection. It is built by Eaglewood Homes and is located on 'model row' in the Paramount neighborhood. It is contemporary and has some unique ideas. The stair rail is made from brushed steel posts strung with airline cable.

Here is a 5 unit townhome I have been working on. It is now under construction, so I was able to get a few pictures. It's fun for me to compare the actual construction to my initial drawing. I can't wait to see the inside. The colors and finishes will be very unique in this type of product. I will post pictures as it gets more complete. The builder/marketing representative was able to get this sponsored by Pottery Barn. We will be meeting with them soon to do space planning and furniture selections. Should be fun!

Patio Home Designs

These are the renderings of some patio homes I was asked to help design the elevations for. They are on long and narrow lots and are very close together so you don't see the length but primarily the front. Each has a rear loading garage along a back alley. They sit in a quiet culdesac of a nice neighborhood with bigger homes and face a park and waterfall. Two of them (the 1st and last pictures) are through framing and are progressing quickly with stone and other details. I did exterior color boards but the builder has those. It is fun to see them go up. We also made the interior selections and I am anxious to see how they come together. We will be staging the first one as a model. I will post pictures when they are more complete and show the colors.

I worked on the Fullmer's new office via email, phone, fax and fed ex. All the details were selected and the design put into place for the contractor to get to work. Larry and I flew to Arizona to work on putting it together. We found an amazing stay at home mom/faux finish artist to come in and paint the children's area, and developed and framed numerous photos by my talented brother Nate. This slideshow documents the finished product. The Fullmer's were awesome to work with--I love them. It's no surprise that their practice is doing well.
